:: Kindergarten Curriculum ::

:: Reading/Language Arts

The Kindergarten language arts program includes listening, speaking, reading and writing. Our goal is to generate interest and excitement about language. Recognizing that children learn in different ways, we adopt a variety of methods to meet our students’ needs. To help prepare children to read, we provide our students with experiences rich in language and literature through big books, poetry and leveled readers. Small and large group discussions, individual support and guided reading are used to build comprehension. Emergent and fluent readers develop strategies that build upon phonemic awareness, phonics and whole language. They begin to recognize words and develop a sight vocabulary.

:: Mathematics

Our teachers utilize class discussions, small groups and one-to-one instruction to facilitate our math curriculum. The math program incorporates hands-on, concrete experiences to enable students to reason mathematically, develop problem-solving strategies and make mathematical connections. Computational practice is also an integral part of instruction.

Units include counting and reading numbers to 31 and beyond; skip counting by twos, fives and tens; reproducing and creating patterns; understanding fractions; determining distance in feet; telling time by the hour and half-hour; identifying and counting coins up to one dollar; exploring three-dimensional shapes, bar graphs and pictographs; and the processes of addition and subtraction through ten.

::
Science

Our students develop the skills of scientific inquiry through hands-on activities and simple laboratory experiments. Our science teacher works with the children in a science lab and presents themes including the scientific method, the five senses, matter, light, the solar system and space travel, the human body, paleontology and geology.

The students are encouraged to express what they have learned in writing or through drawing. All students are given an opportunity to share their knowledge with family and friends in our annual science fair.

:: Social Studies

The social studies curriculum integrates Judaic and secular holidays and celebrations. In addition to stories related to Israel, Jewish folklore and Bible stories, students are encouraged to participate in Tzedakah. Units about themselves, their family and school are studied. Geography and maps are introduced.

:: Hebrew and Judaic Studies

By learning Hebrew as a modern spoken language, our students begin to develop a connection not just with their religion but with Israel as well. Kindergarten students learn vocabulary words and short phrases through a variety of games, books and hands-on activities. The letters and sounds of the aleph-bet are introduced.

 Our Jewish culture, heritage and values are brought to life in weekly celebrations of Shabbat and Havdalah with the caring and dedicated Rabbis of Washington Hebrew Congregation.

:: Technology

Computer usage provides an opportunity to develop fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination. We are fortunate to have both a computer lab and a technology specialist to lead our children. Programs are chosen to enrich, extend and complement classroom instruction.

:: Art

In our spacious and bright art room students learn to use a variety of media for communication and expression. They begin to develop an aesthetic knowledge of and appreciation for many forms of expression.

:: Music

The instrumental music curriculum is structured around the “instrument families”. The children see, touch, feel and (where appropriate) play a wide variety of instruments throughout the school year. Our vocal music program focuses on applying music skills and concepts. Children experience the joy of music while performing in a group.

:: Physical Education

The physical education program develops skills in the areas of movement awareness, gymnastics and sports.

:: Media Center

The main focus of the Media Center is to instill a love of books in our children. Our media specialist introduces students to a variety of genres and library skills. Our shelves are filled with hundreds of books on a wide variety of subjects including picture books, fairy tales, novels, poetry books and an ever-growing Judaic collection. Non-fiction works include biographies, history, geography, science, nature and reference books.

Kindergarten students learn how to choose appropriate books and care for them. “Book Talks” give students the opportunity to review and discuss favorite books with their classmates. Author studies are a major part of our Primary School Media Center curriculum. The Kindergarten classes will read several books by an author and learn to recognize similarities and differences in the author’s works.
