an RJWECC program for the 2012-2013 school year.
The RJWECC is a preschool for children ages 18
months to five years. We are located in the Julia Bindeman Suburban
Center, in Potomac, Maryland.
At
our school, children are encouraged to be creative and
curious. Through a unit approach, which varies at each age level,
our teachers select tasks and materials that focus on the individual
needs of their class within the basic structure of our curriculum.
We integrate subject areas into the total learning situation of
a classroom. Broad curriculum areas include science, social studies,
readiness skills, language arts and mathematics concepts. Health and
safety, nutrition, music and art appreciation, the Jewish home and
festivals are some of the units through which our curriculum is
implemented. All programming is specifically designed to be
developmentally appropriate.
School Environment
Our modern building includes a computer
lab, art room, music room, science center and media center.
Children play and learn in bright, well-equipped classrooms. We have
new playgrounds with ample shade, and large, well-equipped safe open spaces for
indoor play. Religious celebrations are held in our worship space
and outdoor amphitheater.
Special Events
Our
students
enjoy a wide variety of special events and programs throughout the
year. These include weekly Shabbat experiences with their class
and as a community with their entire grade. The children celebrate
all Jewish holidays and some highlights include spending time in our Sukkah,
participating in Hanukkah
festivities - including school-wide candle lighting and blessings,
marching in Purim parades, and "travelling" to Israel for Yom
Ha'Atzmaut. Our students also learn the value of tikkun olam
(repairing the world) and participate in
several community service activities throughout the year.
Families have the opportunity to participate in many activities
with their children, including Shabbat Sing, Birthday celebrations, Thanksgiving feasts,
Hanukkah workshops, Passover sederim and chaperoned field trips
(beginning in the 3's).

Educational Support Staff
Students in our 3s and 4s/Pre-K classes meet in small groups weekly
with our reading and hand-writing readiness specialists. For
students needing support, speech and
occupational therapists and a special needs consultant are available
to work with classes, small groups and individual children and
parents.
Health and Safety
Our school has a full-time registered nurse on-site who is available
to assist families with medication administration during school
hours. We also have off-duty Montgomery County police officers present whenever children are in
our school.

Tune In To Toddlers
for children 18 - 28 months old and
their parent
This first
introduction to our school is offered once per week on Tuesdays or Thursdays
from
9:15 - 10:45 am.
The program has a socialization and
language focus. Children are introduced to a school setting
through crafts, music and large muscle activities. This is a
delightful way for parents to interact with their children as
they begin to explore the world around them.
::
Transitional Twos
(T2s)
for children

Children attend with their parent

exceptionally small size and low teacher-student ratio make this
program a very successful "first step" into preschool.
Students enjoy art, story time and many hands-on play
activities. The children also participate in weekly music and
creative movement classes with our specialists. Upon
completion of this program, the children will attend our traditional
two-year-old program.
