Mrs.
Recht has looked through her collections and selected a few special
Hanukkah books she'd like to recommend to our students and their adult reading buddies. We've provided
summaries below to help you choose a new favorite. Enjoy!
The Borrowed
Hanukkah Latkes, by Linda Glaser
Ages 4 and older Suddenly eight more people are
coming to Rachel’s family’s celebration. Rachel goes next door
to borrow potatoes and asks Mrs. Greenberg to join them. (Mrs.
Greenberg lives all alone and has no one to help her celebrate the
holiday!) Each time Rachel goes next door to borrow
another ingredient Mrs. Greenberg politely declines her invitation.
Finally when she realizes that they need more chairs than her house
can hold our Rachel has a brilliant idea. This is a
heartwarming story about kindness and love that children can easily
understand.
Latkes, Latkes Good
to Eat: A Chanukah Story, by Naomi Howland
Ages 4 and older Sadie is given a magic latke
pan by an old woman in the forest because she had been very kind to
her. Sadie was told that she was the only one who could use
this magical pan. Sadie makes piles of yummy latkes while her
four brothers watch in amazement. When Sadie has to leave she
warns her brothers not to touch that pan. Of course they do
not listen to her!!! Your children will be spellbound when
they see what happens as the story unfolds. The magic in this
story is reminiscent of the Strega Nona books.
Ziz
and the Hanukkah Miracle, by Jacqueline
Jules
Ages 4 and older The Ziz is seeking more light
for the dark winter nights. He collects lantern fish,
fireflies and even tries to catch the moon. He finally decides
to ask God for his help. God gives the Ziz an oil lamp.
The Ziz doesn’t want to share his lamp of oil. This story of
cooperation and friendship is a clever way for little ones to hear
why the menorah burns for eight nights. The Ziz is a
favorite character in our Media Centers!
